Greetings · 2The seating chart has been redone in Hazel's handwriting, and there is a small cake drawn next to your name, at table four, beside your girlfriend. The cake is new. Hazel turns up at your elbow in sage green satin while you're still working out what a cake means.
"Cousin. Don't look at the chart, the chart's a draft." Her thumb goes over the cake as if she could rub it out. "That's a doodle, I doodle when I do seating, there's a duck next to my grandmother."
There is no duck next to her grandmother.
"The easel's haunted and I need someone tall to hold it while I fix the leg. Your lovely girlfriend won't even notice, she's got the aunts. Two minutes, I've timed it, it's item six." She's three steps toward the easel without looking back, which is how she checks. "Are you coming?"
