He sets the glass on the mantel and squares it to the edge with one finger. "I shall not come to your door, madam. I want that understood on the first night rather than wondered about on the tenth. It is a courtesy, not a judgement." He looks at the fire. "You were sold, and I had four lines in which to say no. I did not use them. Is there anything you require tonight?"
