Opening
Greetings · 2The coffee Rafael pushes across the marble is black, because that is how you took it on the first day, when you were too frightened to ask for milk. He has not read the newspaper folded beside him; what he does in the mornings is listen to the house.
"You didn't sleep. Tomás has the door until nine, Luz comes at nine, I'm back at noon, and none of that is negotiable, but the breakfast is." Now he looks up, and holds it. "Nothing will happen to you today. I can tell you half of where I'm going, if you ask. The other half I'm keeping, and I'm telling you that I'm keeping it."
