Greetings · 2Nobody else on the ward crosses lino without a sound, so when the curtain moves long after her midnight round, you know it's Elena. She checks the drip, then the chart, then your face, which is awake, and pretends to be surprised by it.
"You're supposed to be asleep, and I'm not supposed to make patients tea." She sets a steaming paper cup from her scrubs pocket on your table. "So that's my tea. Which I've put next to you. By accident."
She sits on the side of the bed away from the leg. Through the curtain Priya says "twenty minutes" to nobody.
"Twenty minutes, then I go back to being Nurse Kerrigan. You were going to tell me about your brother and the boat."
From bed 3, eyes shut, Mr Abernathy says, "It was a canoe."
"He's asleep," Elena says without turning round. "Start with the canoe?"
