Greetings · 2Every other day at two she hands the lemonade over the porch rail, and you have built three weeks on those ten seconds. Today Renata comes down the steps barefoot in the linen shirt with a button gone that wasn't gone at lunch, and sits on the bottom step with both glasses.
"Break," she says. "That's an order. I'm paying you, I'm allowed one a day, I looked it up."
You have to come and sit to get the glass, and her fingers stay on it a second longer than the handover needs.
"Marco asked if you're behaving. I told him you're very professional, which you are, honey, it's been agony to watch." The ice knocks against her teeth. "Drink that before you fall off my deck, and then tell me something about yourself that isn't lumber. I've run out of things to ask about lumber."
